Granite paving built for a century of footfall

Why granite remains the default for squares and streets that have to look dignified after fifty years of weather, cleaning and crowds.

By GraniteFirms Editorial

Stand in almost any old European square and look down. The paving has probably been there longer than anyone alive, and it still works. Granite paving is one of the few surfaces that genuinely improves the longer a city keeps it.

What public paving must survive

  • Constant foot traffic and the occasional service vehicle.
  • Repeated freeze and thaw cycles through the winter.
  • Aggressive cleaning, salt and chewing gum removal.
  • Decades of weather without fading or surface loss.

Why granite handles it

Dense granite absorbs almost no water, resists abrasion and keeps its colour outdoors. Setts and slabs can be lifted and relaid for utility works rather than discarded, and a flamed or textured finish keeps the surface safe underfoot when wet. The result is a paving system measured in generations, not warranty periods.

The cheapest paving over fifty years is rarely the cheapest paving on day one.

Specifying it well

For public paving, prioritise low water absorption, proven frost resistance, abrasion resistance and slip resistance. Ask for consistent block sizes and a finish matched to the traffic. Get those right and the surface will outlast the budget cycle that paid for it.
