Natural stone families explained: granite, marble, travertine and more

Granite, marble, travertine, limestone and quartzite each behave differently. A plain language guide to the main natural stone families and where each one belongs.

By GraniteFirms Editorial

Natural stone is not one material. The word covers several rock families that formed in very different ways and behave very differently in use. Choosing well starts with understanding those differences.

Granite, the hard all rounder

Granite is an igneous stone, hard, dense and highly resistant to scratching, staining, frost and wear. It suits countertops, flooring, stairs, exterior paving and façades, and it performs especially well outdoors and in high traffic spaces. For most demanding applications, granite is the safe choice.

Marble, beauty for interiors

Marble is a metamorphic stone prized for its veining and soft glow. It is more elegant than granite but also softer and more reactive, so acids such as wine, citrus and many cleaners can etch it. Marble shines in interiors, on feature walls, vanities and low traffic floors, but it needs more care and is rarely the right choice for exterior or heavy use.

Travertine, warm and characterful

Travertine is a form of limestone with a warm tone and a naturally pitted surface that can be filled and polished or left textured. It is lighter and more porous than granite, which makes it attractive but more vulnerable to staining and frost. It works well for warm interiors and sheltered outdoor areas in mild climates.

Limestone and quartzite

  • Limestone offers a soft, uniform look for cladding and interiors, but it is porous and needs sealing and care.
  • Quartzite is a hard metamorphic stone that rivals granite for durability and brings dramatic patterns, often at a premium price.
Match the stone to the job: granite and quartzite for hard wear and exteriors, marble and travertine for interior character.

How to choose

Start from the application. For exterior paving, façades and busy floors, prioritise hardness, low water absorption and frost resistance, which point to granite or quartzite. For interior surfaces where appearance leads and wear is light, marble and travertine open up. Many producers supply several families, so you can match each surface in a project to the right stone from a single trusted source.
