Calibration: why slab thickness consistency matters
The least glamorous step in stone processing is one of the most important. Here is how calibration affects installation speed, cost and the final look of a floor or façade.

Ask an installer what separates an easy job from a painful one and calibration will come up fast. It is the step that grinds every tile or slab to a uniform thickness, and it quietly decides how the finished surface looks and how long it takes to lay.
What poor calibration causes
- Lippage, where the edges of adjacent tiles sit at different heights.
- Slower installation as fitters shim and adjust each piece.
- Higher labour cost and more adhesive.
- A surface that never looks quite flat or premium.
Why it is worth paying for
Tightly calibrated stone drops into place, sits flat and reads as a single clean plane. For large floors and façades, where small errors multiply across hundreds of pieces, accurate calibration is one of the clearest signs of a quality processor.
