Polished, honed or flamed: choosing a granite finish

The same granite can feel mirror-smooth or grippy and matte depending on the finish. A short guide to the main surface finishes and where each one belongs.

By GraniteFirms Editorial

Finish is one of the most important decisions you make about a stone, and it has little to do with the stone itself. The same slab can be polished to a mirror or flamed to a rough texture. Choosing well means matching the finish to how the surface will be used.

The main finishes

  • Polished: a deep, reflective shine that brings out colour and pattern, ideal for countertops and interior surfaces.
  • Honed: smooth but matte, hides scratches and fingerprints, well suited to busy floors.
  • Flamed: heat opens the surface into a rough, slip resistant texture for exterior paving and steps.
  • Brushed and leathered: a soft textured feel with low glare, increasingly popular for kitchens.
  • Bush hammered and shot blasted: rugged grip for public paving and ramps.

Match the finish to the job

Indoors, where appearance leads, polished and honed dominate. Outdoors and in wet areas, slip resistance matters more than shine, so flamed and textured finishes win. The same project often mixes finishes: polished interior floors, flamed exterior steps and a honed reception desk, all from one stone for visual continuity.
